Pope Francis inaugurated the next Synod 2021-2023. The word “Synod” simply means “a way together.” Recent popes have held synod gatherings to reflect upon such topics as the Family, the New Evangelization, the Word of God. With this current Synod, Pope Francis wants us to reflect upon how we can be a “synodal” church, that is, how we are “journeying together” in our world today. Pope Francis is asking us to undertake local consultations of people in our parish communities. In fact, he wants us to invite not just Catholics but anyone, especially those who may be forgotten or on the peripheries of our parishes and towns, to join in this conversation. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us as we reflect on our experience of life in the Church locally, in our diocese and as a part of the universal Church throughout the world.
